How AI is used
Record the kind of support, the date of the incident or the homicide finding, the client's age, whether the matter is domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse or other violence, and the limit the lawyer states, each with its source. Do not choose the limit.
What the lawyer must review
  • Decide which published time limit applies to that kind of support
  • Check the incident date and the client's age against a document
  • Diary the deadline. Counselling is not given the recognition-payment limit

Produce. An eligibility and deadline register entry for the kind of support sought.

Have ready. Kind of support the lawyer names; Incident date or the date the death was established as a homicide; Client's date of birth.

Example of the limit. Illustrative example: The lawyer classifies an adult client as a primary victim of domestic violence seeking a recognition payment. The register records a 10-year limit from the incident date on the police report. It does not record a limit for counselling.

Stop and hand it back when

  • The kind of support is not stated.
  • A child's date of birth is missing where the limit runs from the 18th birthday.

The recognition-payment page states these periods. It does not, in the text opened, set out an extension test. Do not record that a late application can be accepted unless the lawyer has checked the Act.

Financial assistance has its own limit. Do not copy the recognition-payment period across without the lawyer saying so.
