Build the crime-victim compensation eligibility and deadline register
Key facts
- Human involvement
- YellowClose supervision
- How AI is used
- Set up a register with the state program, the crime date, the application date and the expense categories the lawyer has taken from that program’s statute. Do not fill caps or deadlines from memory.
- What the lawyer must review
- Compensation is a state program. 34 U.S.C. § 20102 makes a state program eligible for a federal grant if it offers compensation to victims and survivors of criminal violence, including drunk driving and domestic violence, for medical expenses attributable to a physical injury (including mental-health counselling and care), loss of wages attributable to a physical injury, and funeral expenses attributable to a death, and if it meets the other conditions in subsection (b). Caps, excluded crimes and time limits are in the state statute, not in § 20102. The Office for Victims of Crime state-support page is the federal pointer. Open the state program before you tell the client they are in time.
