Where this comes from
The official form is published by copyright.gov; this page is a completion guide. Last checked on 2026-10-22.
When to use it
Use when a claimant will register a basic copyright claim with the US Copyright Office, preferably through eCO. Paper Forms TX, VA, PA and SR exist for the classes the FAQ names. Do not use this note to decide that a work is protected or who owns it.
Used for these tasks
Each task page says how far AI may help with the task and what the lawyer must review.
How AI may be used
The tool may list which FAQ points the lawyer has not yet checked, and it must not complete a registration application or assert that a work is protected.
AI may
- List whether the lawyer has chosen eCO or a paper form, and whether the work is one of the four classes the FAQ names
- Remind the lawyer that Circulars 33 and 61 were cited by the FAQ and not opened, and that no fee or deposit rule was copied
AI must not
- Must not complete any field of a copyright application
- Must not decide that a work is original, who the author or claimant is, or whether a work is a work made for hire
- Must not say that a name, title, short phrase or slogan is protected by copyright
- Must not add a perjury declaration. The opened FAQ does not contain one
The lawyer checks
- The FAQ says online registration through the electronic Copyright Office at copyright.gov/registration is the preferred way to register basic claims
- Paper Form TX is for literary works, Form VA for visual arts, Form PA for performing arts, and Form SR for sound recordings. They are on the forms site. Staff will mail them on request. eCO can be used for these types
- The paper forms were not opened line by line. No edition date is stated because none was printed on the FAQ
- The FAQ says names, titles, short phrases and slogans are not copyrightable, and points to Circular 33. It points to Circular 61 for computer programs. Those circulars were not opened
- The registration portal page was opened and the capture was mostly navigation. Deposit rules, fees and any certification on the application were not read. Do not invent them
