Where this comes from
The official form is published by consumerfinance.gov; this page is a completion guide. Last checked on 2026-10-22.
When to use it
Use when the sender is a debt collector and the debt is a consumer debt under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Complete the current Model Form B-1, or a form that stays substantially similar. Do not use the commercial demand letter for this debt.
Used for these tasks
- Check a collection letter and contact sequence against the debt collection guideline
- Draft a letter of demand from the contract and the ledger
- Check the preconditions before listing a consumer default
Each task page says how far AI may help with the task and what the lawyer must review.
How AI may be used
AI may fill a cover checklist from the placement file. The lawyer chooses the itemization date, the amounts, and whether Model Form B-1 is required at all.
AI may
- List the file fields the form needs: collector name and dispute address, consumer name and address, creditor, account number, itemization date, amounts
- Flag a field that is blank or that conflicts with another document in the file
- Remind the user that the official form is completed on the CFPB text, not redrawn
AI must not
- Must not choose the itemization date or calculate the validation-period end date
- Must not redesign Model Form B-1 or drop the dispute prompts
- Must not send the notice
The lawyer checks
- The person is a debt collector and the obligation is a consumer debt, or the lawyer has recorded why the form is still being used
- The itemization date is one of the five dates in § 1006.34(b)(3), and the figures reconcile to it
- Nothing on the notice is more prominent than the required validation information in a way that fails the safe-harbor conditions the lawyer is relying on
Method: how the Green, Yellow and Red levels are decided. This is guidance for planning, not legal advice.
