When to use it
Use when a Western Australian death has been reported to the coroner and the file needs a running note of the investigation, the finding, and whether an inquest is being held.
Used for these tasks
Each task page says how far AI may help with the task and what the lawyer must review.
How AI may be used
The tool may fill dates, contacts and the stage of the investigation from the file, and it does not decide the cause of death or whether an inquest should be held.
AI may
- Enter the date the death was reported and which office is dealing with it.
- Tick only the investigation steps the file shows have happened.
- Record the court's stated timing as a range to revisit, not as a promised end date.
- Record whether the matter ended in a Record of Investigation of Death or went to inquest.
AI must not
- Do not list who may ask for a status update under section 37(5). The process page names that section and the Coroners Act 1996 (WA) was not opened.
- Do not state a cause of death.
- Do not draft findings, comments or recommendations.
- Do not treat the regional contact list as opened. The useful-contact-numbers page was not opened.
The lawyer checks
- Confirm the Perth and regional arrangement against the current process page. It was last updated on 2 December 2024 when read.
- Confirm any status enquiry is made by a person the lawyer is satisfied falls within section 37(5), after reading the Act.
- Keep the inquest note separate from any submission.
Method: how the Green, Yellow and Red levels are decided. This is guidance for planning, not legal advice.
