When to use it
Use when a family or another interested person wants a Queensland coroner to hold an inquest, or an inquest has been directed and a pre-inquest conference is coming.
Used for these tasks
- Prepare the family's request for an inquest or for review of a decision not to hold one
- Prepare an application for leave to appear at an inquest
- Build the issues-to-witness matrix for an inquest
Each task page says how far AI may help with the task and what the lawyer must review.
How AI may be used
The tool may fill the dates and the issues list from the file, and the lawyer decides whether a request is made and what is said to be in the public interest.
AI may
- Record whether any mandatory-inquest category on the court's page appears to apply, and leave the conclusion for the lawyer.
- Record the date a Form 15 request was sent and the date reasons were received.
- Calculate the six-month decision date and the 14-day date after reasons, and mark both as dates to check.
- At a pre-inquest conference, list the issues, parties, witnesses, estimated length and place the coroner is asked to set.
AI must not
- Do not complete Form 15 or Form 16. Both PDFs are linked from the inquests page and were not opened.
- Do not draft a witness statement. A statement to police is not this checklist.
- Do not say the coroner must hold an inquest unless a category the page calls mandatory is met and the lawyer agrees.
- Do not describe District Court procedure. The page names the Court and was not a practice direction.
The lawyer checks
- Confirm the public-interest reasons are the lawyer's, not a generated conclusion.
- Confirm the six-month and 14-day dates against the current inquests page and the filed request.
- Confirm leave to participate is asked for separately from the request to hold an inquest.
- Check Form 15 and Form 16 on the court site before either is used.
Method: how the Green, Yellow and Red levels are decided. This is guidance for planning, not legal advice.
