Tasks in Animal Law
TaskHow AI is usedHuman involvementWhat the lawyer must review
Retrieve the approved keeper category for a repeat native animal on the firm listStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the species name the user enters, return only the keeper category, licence type and review date already stored on the firm list for that exact species name. If the name does not match a row exactly, return no category.
GreenLawyer review
The lawyer approves each row against the current keeper list for the place where the animal will be kept, and re-approves the row when that list changes, before the stored category is used.
Check whether keeping a native animal needs a wildlife licenceStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the species, the place it will be kept, and whether it was captive-bred or taken from the wild, as the lawyer records, list the licence headings on the official keeper page the lawyer has opened for that place. Do not say that a licence is or is not required.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides whether a licence is required before the animal is acquired, which class of licence, and whether the species may be kept at all.
Check whether moving livestock on foot needs a stock route or travelling stock permitStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the route, the stock type, the dates and whether the stock will walk or travel by truck or rail, as the lawyer records, list the permit types and lead times stated on the official page the lawyer opens for that route. Do not say that a permit is or is not required and do not complete an application.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides which permit is required, whether an exception applies, and whether the stock can meet the travel rate. The lawyer lodges the application in time.
Extract the orders in a biosecurity direction about animalsStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the direction or its written confirmation, extract each required action, the person it names, the animals or place it covers, and any date. If the document is a biosecurity undertaking instead of a direction, label it as an undertaking and extract the actions it records. Do not advise whether the direction is valid or whether to comply.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides what the direction requires, whether a verbal direction has been confirmed in writing in time, and what the client will do. The lawyer writes any response.
List the keeping conditions that follow a dangerous or menacing dog declarationStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the declaration notice and the official conditions page the lawyer opens for that place, list each condition the page states for the category named in the notice. Do not add a condition from another category or another place.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer checks the list against the notice and the Act, tells the owner which conditions apply to this dog, and diarises any permit or address-notice period.
Prepare an objection to a proposed dangerous or menacing dog declarationStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the notice of intention, extract the date of the notice, the category proposed, the behaviour alleged and the date any objection is due if the notice or the official page states one. List the records the lawyer has marked, such as registration, microchip and any behavioural assessment. Do not write the objection and do not describe the incident.
RedLawyer-led
The lawyer decides whether to object, what evidence to include, and the contents of the objection. The lawyer writes and lodges it inside the time on the notice.
Advise on a charge of cruelty to an animalStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the charge, the brief index and the clinical or inspection records the lawyer marks, make a table of each allegation, the date, the animal and the document page. Do not write the advice, a plea, or an account of what happened.
RedLawyer-led
The lawyer advises on the elements, the penalties and any exemption or defence under the Act that applies in that place, and on the plea and the next step. The lawyer writes the advice.
Advise whether a proposed procedure on an animal is prohibitedStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the procedure the lawyer names, quote any matching line on the official prohibited-procedure page the lawyer has opened, including who may perform it and for what purpose. Do not say that the procedure is lawful.
RedLawyer-led
The lawyer decides whether the procedure is prohibited, whether a veterinary or therapeutic exception applies, and what the client may do. The lawyer writes the advice.
Prepare a complaint about a veterinary practitioner treatment of an animalStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the clinical records, invoices and messages the lawyer marks, build a dated table of consultations, drugs, procedures and fees, each with the document and page. Do not write the complaint, describe the client account of what happened, or say whether the conduct was unsatisfactory.
RedLawyer-led
The lawyer decides whether the board can deal with the complaint, whether the client must first write to the practitioner, and the contents of the complaint. The lawyer settles the complaint with the client and the client lodges it.
Check whether moving a native animal across a border needs a wildlife licenceStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the species, the origin and the destination the lawyer records, list the import, export or movement headings on the official wildlife page the lawyer has opened for each place. Do not say that the movement is permitted.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides which licences or movement authorities are required at the origin and at the destination before the animal is moved.
Check whether a livestock movement must be recorded on the identification databaseStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the species, the property identification codes and the arrival time the lawyer supplies, set out whether the movement is between different codes and whether a database report and an approved device are shown in the file. Do not lodge the movement.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides whether the animals are cattle, sheep, goats or pigs moving between properties, whether the device and the report meet the rule, and who lodges the report.
Check whether rehabilitating a protected animal needs a rehabilitation licenceStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the species and the reason the animal is held, state whether the file shows a biodiversity conservation licence for rehabilitation, or that the holder is a registered veterinarian. Do not decide that the animal may be kept.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides whether the animal is a protected animal being held for rehabilitation, whether a registered veterinarian exception applies, and whether the licence covers the species and the holder.
List the conditions on a wildlife rehabilitation licenceStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the licence the lawyer supplies, list each condition in the licence words, including any age limit, zone, ban on public display, and record-keeping date. Do not add a condition that is not on the licence.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer checks the list against the licence, decides which sample conditions on the department page still apply, and decides whether a condition has been breached.
Check whether a cat or dog is registered on the pet registryStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the registry extract or council record the lawyer supplies, state whether a lifetime registration payment is recorded for that microchip, and the date of payment. If no payment is recorded, say the pet is not registered on the material supplied. Do not complete a registration form.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer confirms the microchip belongs to the animal, decides whether registration has been paid, and prepares any ownership document the council requires.
Extract the orders in an animal welfare directionStart this taskSee suggested levels
From the direction or notice the lawyer supplies, list each order, the animal it names, the date of the notice, and any review period printed on the notice. Do not draft a review application.
YellowClose supervision
The lawyer decides what the direction requires, whether a review is open, and whether to apply. The lawyer writes any review application.

How this work usually runsAnimal-law work arrives as a notice, a charge or a question asked before something is done. An owner receives a notice of intention to declare a dog dangerous or menacing and has a short time, seven days from the date of issue on the New South Wales page, to object. After a declaration, the keeping rules differ for a dangerous dog and a menacing dog, and they differ again between the Companion Animals Act 1998 and the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. A cruelty charge is prosecuted under the animal-welfare statute of the place, in Victoria the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986, by police or an authorised inspector who may also seize the animal. A breeder or a veterinary practice asks, before a procedure, whether docking, cropping, debarking or a similar step is prohibited. A keeper asks, before acquiring or moving a native animal, whether a wildlife licence is required at that place and at the other end of the trip. A producer walking stock asks whether the route needs a stock-route travel permit or a travelling-stock permit, and how many days ahead it must be lodged. An authorised officer may give a biosecurity direction about stock or a property, usually in writing, with a verbal direction confirmed in writing within seven days unless it has already been complied with. An owner who is unhappy with treatment lodges a complaint with the veterinary board for the place where the practitioner is registered, often only after a written approach to the practitioner.
Why animal law is its own areaProsecutions for cruelty, objections to dangerous and menacing dog declarations, wildlife licences, stock-route and travelling-stock permits, biosecurity directions about animals, and complaints to veterinary boards are a distinct practice. A farm biosecurity chronology and an export-permit checklist already live with agribusiness. This area starts from the animal, the notice and the licence.
The Act is the Act of the placeCruelty, dog declarations, wildlife licences and stock permits are State and Territory law. A keeper category approved for one place is not used in another. The Victorian cruelty elements and the Victorian prohibited-procedure list were the offence pages opened. They are not a national code. Each task names the page it was checked against.
The objection, the advice and the complaint are the lawyer writingAn objection to a declaration, advice on a cruelty charge, advice on a prohibited procedure, and a complaint to a veterinary board are lodged or signed, or they are the advice itself. The tool can table dates and records. It does not write the client account of what happened and it does not write the document that is lodged.
Read the notice for the time limitThe New South Wales dog page gives seven days from the date the council issues a notice of intention. A New South Wales travelling-stock permit needs at least two working days. A Queensland stock-route application is lodged at least seven days before travel. A verbal biosecurity direction is confirmed in writing within seven days unless it has already been complied with. The Queensland regulated-dog page that was opened does not state an objection period, so the period is taken from the notice and the Act.
