Set out the options for repaying a Social Security overpayment
Key facts
- Human involvement
- YellowClose supervision
- How AI is used
- List the repayment options on the Administration's repay page that match the letter in the file, including the Remittance ID if the letter has one. Write no waiver request.
- What the lawyer must review
- The Social Security Administration's repay page says that if a letter states the person was paid more than was due, the person should repay within 30 days. If the letter includes online payment instructions and a Remittance ID, repayment can be made at Pay.gov with that ID. Online bill pay uses the payee Social Security Administration, PO Box 3430, Philadelphia, PA 19122-0340, phone 1-855-807-8807, and the Remittance ID as the account number. A person who no longer receives benefits and cannot afford to repay the full amount now can call 1-855-807-8807 to set up a payment plan or to ask about settling the overpayment. Do not say that a payment plan stops collection. Whether collection waits, and how a waiver or an appeal affects collection, is on the resolve-overpayment page. Keep that page separate from this list. You decide what the client asks for.
