The work product
Forum. Victoria: a WorkSafe hearing-loss impairment benefit
Produce. A hearing-loss table. The lawyer decides any deduction and any County Court step.
Have ready. The audiograms and the whole-person figure, if one has been issued; Any earlier Victorian hearing-loss payment, in dollars; Interstate employment and whether the worker consents to enquiries.
Example of the limit. Illustrative example: An earlier Victorian payment is recorded on a notice and the new assessment is above 10 per cent. The table shows a dollar deduction only from the figure on that notice, and it does not deduct the old percentage. It does not convert a binaural figure.
Stop and hand it back when
- The table converts a hearing figure to a whole-person impairment without a conversion on the opened page.
- The table seeks interstate records without the worker's consent.

Checklist
- The claims manual says the hearing-loss threshold is 10 per cent whole person impairment, and that it need only be met once. A later claim does not have to meet it again.
- Where there is an earlier Victorian hearing-loss payment, the dollar amount paid is deducted from the later dollar entitlement. The percentage is not deducted. The assessor is not asked to deduct the prior percentage.
- Employment must be considered as a significant contributing factor. The worker's consent is required before information is sought from an interstate employer or insurer. Where part of the loss is treated as interstate, the manual describes a percentage deduction on a time-weighted scale.
- If the worker disputes a notice of entitlement because of an interstate deduction, the manual says the appeal lies in the County Court.
