- What the lawyer must review
- 18 U.S.C. § 3771(a)(2) gives a crime victim the right to reasonable, accurate, and timely notice of any public court proceeding, or any parole proceeding, involving the crime, or of any release or escape of the accused. Subsection (c)(3) says notice of release otherwise required shall not be given if such notice may endanger the safety of any person. Officers and employees engaged in the detection, investigation, or prosecution of crime shall make their best efforts to see that victims are notified of and accorded the rights in subsection (a). You confirm the person is a crime victim under the section and whether a safety limit on notice applies. 34 U.S.C. § 20102 is the compensation-grant statute and does not create this notice right.
