How AI is used
From the credential and the file, record the expiration date printed on it, whether the file shows an extension aligning that date with a license or merchant mariner document, and which category in section 70105(b)(2) the file says the person is in. Do not decide that the person is eligible.
What the lawyer must review
Section 70105(a) requires regulations to prevent entry to a secure area designated in a vessel or facility security plan approved under section 70103 unless the individual holds a transportation worker identification credential and is authorized under the plan, or is accompanied by such an individual. A person shall not admit an individual except in compliance with that rule. Subsection (b) requires issuance of a biometric credential to the categories in paragraph (2) unless the Secretary determines the individual poses a security risk warranting denial. Paragraph (3) allows the Secretary to extend expiration for up to one year to align it with a license, certificate of registry, or merchant mariner document under chapter 71 or 73. The register records the credential. You decide whether a renewal is needed and whether a category depends on a determination the Secretary has not made. The disqualification lists in subsection (c) are not applied by the register.
