Map firearms and weapons consequences when a protection order is made
Key facts
- Human involvement
- YellowClose supervision
- How AI is used
- From the order as served and the list of licences and weapons the client has given, set out a table of the statutory consequence for each item: whether a licence is automatically revoked, whether a weapons exemption is displaced, whether police have a search power, and what the order itself says must be surrendered. Leave the local rule blank where this file has no opened section for it.
- What the lawyer must review
- The lawyer confirms the order is in force against this person, which licence or exemption is actually held, and what must be surrendered or varied before the client is left holding a firearm or a weapon.

Checklist
- Check the order is the instrument named in the section, not a draft or an expired order.
- For New South Wales, confirm s 24(1) automatic revocation only where the licensee has become subject to an apprehended violence order or a serious domestic abuse prevention order.
- For Queensland, separate a s 81 thing-prohibition from the s 83 displacement of a Weapons Act exemption, and note s 83(3) on when a conviction can follow.
- Do not state a Victorian licence cancellation. Section 159 is a search power.
