From the change record, list the field that changed, the date of the change, the date 21 days after that date, and whether a Form I-17 update is already pending. Do not write the update, the evidence list, or any letter to SEVP.
What the lawyer must review
You decide what must be reported and you write any letter. Study in the States, Updates to Form I-17, last updated 21 October 2025, says a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program must report changes to the Form I-17, Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Student, and must keep the form current. Any change to the information on the form requires an update within 21 days of the change. Failure to follow the regulation may result in withdrawal of certification. The principal designated school official updates the petition in SEVIS. If the update needs evidence, it is uploaded when the update is submitted. If evidence is missing, SEVP may cancel the request and ask for resubmission. The evidence depends on school type, accreditation, and programs. The page points to 8 CFR 214.3(a)(2) as the governing regulation. That section was not opened, so its text is not restated. While a submitted update is pending, the petition is locked. A further material change is emailed to sevp@ice.dhs.gov with the school name, school code, a short explanation, and any evidence. A change of principal or designated school official while the petition is locked is emailed to FormI17SupportingEvidence@ice.dhs.gov with a letter, on school letterhead, signed by the current principal designated school official or, if that official is unavailable, by the head of school. The letter includes, for each new official, the name, position, school address, school code, work address, telephone number, email address, existing SEVIS username if known, why the current principal official cannot submit the update, and the role and campus. The upload-evidence help page, last updated 27 July 2026, says evidence is required for a petition update and must be uploaded in SEVIS at the time of submission.
