How AI is used
From the request or the proposed decision, list whether the student asked to withdraw, was suspended, was expelled, stopped attending during the term, or failed to enroll for the next session, and any reduced-course-load approval already on the record. Do not choose the SEVIS termination reason, and do not write the remarks that will be entered.
What the lawyer must review
You choose the SEVIS reason and you write any remarks. The termination-reasons help page defines Authorized Early Withdrawal as a designated school official's approval of a request to withdraw, and also where the student will interrupt studies for the term or cannot maintain enrollment during the term. An F-1 student must leave the United States within 15 days of the termination date. That grace period does not apply to an M-1 student, who must depart immediately. The page says not to use that reason for a departure during earned vacation. Suspension is used where the student is suspended and can no longer maintain a full course of study. Expulsion is used where the student was expelled from the current program. Unauthorized Withdrawal is used where the student withdrew or stopped attending in the middle of a term without prior approval. Failure to Enroll is used where an initial or continuing student, not on earned vacation, fails to enroll in a full course for the next session. Unauthorized Drop Below Full Course is used where the student is not in a full course and a reduced course load was not approved in advance. Otherwise Failing to Maintain Status is used only where none of the other reasons applies, and the remarks must explain how status was not maintained. A 22 December 2014 Study in the States post states the same 15-day period for an authorized early withdrawal and says the post may be outdated. The reason used here is the reason on the help page. A State school-discipline statute is a different instrument.
