Turn a federal court order into an action list
Key facts
- Human involvement
- RedLawyer-led
- How AI is used
- From the order the lawyer supplies, list each command as printed, the person named, and the date printed. Do not add a step the order does not contain and do not rewrite the command.
- What the lawyer must review
- The order is the source of the obligation. ABA Model Rule 1.1 requires the lawyer to bring the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness, and preparation reasonably necessary to read it. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (29 July 2024) leaves the lawyer responsible for output produced with a generative tool. The list is a working paper. It is not a substitute for the order, and it is not a request to amend the order. The lawyer checks every row against the signed text before anyone acts on it.

Who does what
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Assistance | Supporting preparation only. Consider narrowly defined preparation support after confirming the tool’s capability and permitted scope. The tool writes nothing into the document. Substantive advice, judgement and any restricted content remain with the responsible human. |
| Lawyer | Perform the substantive analysis and decisions. Independently check any permitted supporting work and approve the exact output for its intended use. |
Checklist
- Confirm the output against the client’s instructions and the complete relevant source material, including omissions or contradictions.
- Resolve exceptions and record the responsible lawyer’s approval of the exact output and intended use.
