Dispute a landlord's security-deposit deductions for a tenant
Key facts
- Human involvement
- YellowClose supervision
- How AI is used
- Build a line-by-line table of the landlord's itemized deductions against the condition reports and photographs. Mark items with no photo, no invoice, or a condition noted at move-in. Do not state what the tenant is owed.
- What the lawyer must review
- In California, Civil Code § 1950.5 requires the itemized statement and the remaining security no later than 21 calendar days after the tenant vacates, and it bars claims for ordinary wear and tear and for pre-existing defects. Photographs are required for deduction repairs beginning 1 April 2025. You decide which lines fall outside the statute and what to demand. Other states set different deadlines and remedies.
