Build a regulatory-change table for the places the business operates
Key facts
- Human involvement
- YellowClose supervision
- How AI is used
- For each jurisdiction the lawyer names, list only the changes the lawyer has entered, with the citation and the effective date as entered. Do not add a jurisdiction and do not describe a change that was not entered.
- What the lawyer must review
- The table is a record of what the lawyer has already identified for each place the business operates. ABA Model Rule 1.1 requires the lawyer to know the law that applies, including material differences among states. ABA Formal Opinion 512 (29 July 2024) does not transfer that duty to the tool. Federal law and state law are not interchangeable. The lawyer decides which rows are complete enough to use. The tool does not.

Who does what
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Assistance | Consider narrowly defined preparation support after confirming the tool’s capability and permitted scope. |
| Lawyer | Set the scope, supervise the work closely, verify every part relied on, resolve omissions and exceptions, and approve the exact output. |
Checklist
- Verify the applicable jurisdiction and the version of each relevant law, rule or instrument in force at the material time.
- Confirm the output against the client’s instructions and the complete relevant source material, including omissions or contradictions.
- Resolve exceptions and record the responsible lawyer’s approval of the exact output and intended use.
