How AI is used
Record the order type, the service date printed on the proof, and the expiry date printed on the order. If the order prints no expiry, leave that cell blank and flag it. Do not calculate a date.
What the lawyer must review
For a California personal-conduct, stay-away, or residence-exclusion order issued after notice and a hearing, Family Code section 6345 allows a duration of not more than five years. The order may be renewed, on request, for five or more years or permanently, without a showing of further abuse. The renewal request may be brought within the three months before expiry. Failure to state an expiration date creates an order of three years from issuance. You apply that default. The register only flags a blank. A protection order consistent with 18 USC section 2265(b) receives full faith and credit in another state, tribe, or territory, and registration is not a prerequisite. Section 2265(d)(3) forbids public internet publication of registration information that would likely reveal the identity or location of the protected party. If the protected party uses the Safe at Home program, Family Code section 6345 requires service of a termination or modification motion, brought by someone else, on the Secretary of State.
