Where this comes from
The official form is published by legalaid.nsw.gov.au; this page is a completion guide. Last checked on 2026-10-17.
When to use it
Use when a community legal centre, private practitioner or legal aid lawyer helps a client apply for a grant of legal aid in NSW. Use the current form from Legal Aid NSW each time. For other States, New Zealand or England and Wales, use the local commission's form and rules (notes below).
How AI may be used
AI may summarise the client's income and asset documents into the form's fields for a person to check, in a tool approved for client data. Means and merit decisions belong to the commission, and the client must check and sign every statement.
AI may
- Summarise payslips, Centrelink statements and bank statements into draft income and asset figures, with the source document for each
- Produce a list of missing documents for the client
- Draft a plain-language explanation of the means test and contributions for the client
AI must not
- Must not complete or submit the application without the client checking and signing it
- Must not estimate or fill in figures that are not supported by a document or the client's instructions
- Must not process clients' financial information in a tool the centre has not approved, or one that trains on inputs
The lawyer checks
- Every figure matches a document or the client's confirmed instructions
- The client understands the false application offence and the duty to report changes
- The application addresses the merit test and any urgency
- The current form version is used
Method: how the Green, Yellow and Red levels are decided. This is guidance for planning, not legal advice.
