List the papers in issue without deciding that a lien holds them

How AI is used
List each document the request calls essential to a current proceeding, and whether the file says the representation has ended. Do not say a lien is effective and do not send the file.
What the lawyer must review
You decide what is delivered. Model Rule 1.16(d) says that upon termination the lawyer shall take reasonably practicable steps to protect the client's interests, including surrendering papers and property to which the client is entitled. The same paragraph says the lawyer may retain papers relating to the client to the extent permitted by other law. No statute on retaining liens, and no rule that papers essential to a proceeding must be released, was opened. Do not say a lien holds. The comments to Rule 1.16 were not opened. Model Rule 1.4(a)(4) requires prompt compliance with reasonable requests for information. Formal Opinion 512 applies before the file is sorted by a tool. You decide entitlement.
