Legal assistant

Set up the legal assistant

Connect the AI Law Framework MCP, then give Claude the skill and ChatGPT the instructions. For a legal question, the assistant asks which state or territory applies, cites the framework’s rules with their sources, and leaves out client names.

Your MCP address

Every setup below needs this address. Copy it, then follow the steps for your AI.

https://ailawframework.com/mcp

No query text is logged. See Privacy.

Claude Desktop and Claude.ai

Claude Desktop, claude.ai, Cowork and the mobile apps share one connector on your Claude account.

Quickest: select Add to Claude

Add to Claude (opens claude.ai in a new tab)

Or add the connector by hand

https://ailawframework.com/mcp
  1. Open Customize, then Connectors. On a Free, Pro or Max plan, choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it AI Law Framework. Paste the address above. Choose No sign-in. Leave request headers empty. Select Add.
  3. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds it once under Organization settings, then Connectors. Each person then connects to it. Open the organisation dialog (opens in a new tab).
  4. In a conversation, turn the connector on from the tools menu. A Free plan can add one custom connector.

Install the skill

The skill tells Claude to use the connector only for a legal question.

Download legal-assistant.zip

  1. Download legal-assistant.zip. Do not unzip it.
  2. In Claude, open Customize, then Skills, upload the zip, and turn the skill on.
Zip not working? Build it by hand
  1. Download SKILL.md. If your browser saves it as SKILL (1).md or SKILL.md.txt, rename it to SKILL.md.
  2. Put that file in a folder named legal-assistant, so the path is legal-assistant/SKILL.md.
  3. Zip the folder itself, not its contents. On a Mac, right-click the folder and choose Compress. On Windows, right-click it and choose Send to, then Compressed (zipped) folder.
  4. Upload that zip under Customize, then Skills.

Claude Code

Run this once in a terminal. It adds the server for every project you open.

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user ailawframework https://ailawframework.com/mcp

Then download SKILL.md and save it as ~/.claude/skills/legal-assistant/SKILL.md. To use it in one project only, save it as .claude/skills/legal-assistant/SKILL.md inside that project.

ChatGPT

Connect the MCP so the tools are available, then paste the instructions so a legal question follows them. Developer mode and custom MCP apps are for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. On a personal Free, Go or Plus plan you cannot add this server yet: use Claude, or ask your workspace admin. OpenAI says Pro can connect an MCP in developer mode with read-only permissions; every tool here is read-only, but we have not tested that plan.

Connect the MCP

https://ailawframework.com/mcp
  1. A workspace admin turns on developer mode under Workspace settings, then Permissions & roles, then Connected data (create custom MCP connectors). On Enterprise and Edu, enabled members can switch it on under Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings.
  2. Open Settings, then Apps, then Create. An admin can do the same from Workspace settings, then Apps.
  3. Name it AI Law Framework. In the MCP server URL field, paste the address above. Choose no authentication.
  4. Select Scan tools, then Create. The app appears as a draft with a Dev label. Publish it to the workspace if other people should use it.
  5. In a new chat, choose the app from the tools menu, or mention it in your message.

Add the instructions

Download the ChatGPT instructions

On Free and Go the Custom instructions field holds 1,500 characters. Use the short version there. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education hold 5,000, which fits the full text.

  1. Download the instructions (the short version on Free or Go). They are plain text.
  2. Open Settings, then Personalization. Make sure Enable customization is on, and paste the text into Custom instructions. On the mobile apps the page is called Customize ChatGPT.
  3. The text only acts on a legal question. It says to skip these tools for anything else.

Custom GPTs: OpenAI says a GPT uses either apps or Actions, not both, and does not say a developer-mode draft app can be attached to one. We have not confirmed this server works inside a custom GPT, so use the chat steps above. OpenAI also plans to retire custom GPTs in favour of Plugins, and names 11 December 2026 for affected Enterprise workspaces.

Questions

Do I edit a config file?

No. Claude Desktop and claude.ai add this remote server from Customize, then Connectors, not in claude_desktop_config.json. That file is for a local server, and this one is reached from Claude’s side of the network.

Does the server keep what I ask?

No query text is logged. A usage count, when one is stored, records only the tool name and the practice area for that day. Your AI provider’s own terms still cover the conversation on their side.

Which state does it assume?

None. The default country is Australia, and the assistant asks which state or territory applies. It does not treat New South Wales as the default.

Is an answer legal advice?

No. Answers are general information, not legal advice, and they have to be checked against the primary sources.
