Add the AI Law Framework to Microsoft Copilot
Step-by-step for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and GitHub Copilot. It is free, and you do not sign in.
Which Copilot do you have?
- Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat or CoworkThe Copilot in Word, Teams and the Microsoft 365 app. Needs the download below.
- Copilot StudioYou build your own agents. Add the framework as a tool.
- GitHub Copilot and VS CodeYou code or work in a terminal. One command, or one button in VS Code.
Microsoft 365 Copilot: Copilot Chat and Cowork
One package does both. In Copilot Chat it adds an AI Law Framework agent with 6 starting prompts. In Copilot Cowork it adds the framework’s skills and connector. Everything in it uses the public address, https://ailawframework.com/mcp, with no sign-in.
For the whole firm (an administrator)
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Agents and select Upload custom agent.
- Choose the .zip, check the name and icon, and select Next.
- Choose who can use it (start with yourself or a test group) and select Next, review what it can do and select Next again, then select Finish deployment.
Just for you
- Copilot Cowork: open Customize, then Plugins, select Upload plugin, choose the .zip, pick Only you and select Apply.
- Copilot Chat: if your organisation allows custom apps, open Apps › Manage your apps › Upload an app › Upload a custom app in Teams and choose the .zip. The agent appears in Copilot Chat as well.
Steps checked 2 November 2026, against: upload a custom agent, Cowork plugins and custom app uploads.
Copilot Studio
Add the framework as a tool to an agent you build. There is nothing to download.
- Open Copilot Studio and open the agent, or create one.
- On the agent’s Tools page, select Add a tool, then New tool, then Model Context Protocol.
- Enter the values shown, choose None for authentication and select Create.
- Select Create a new connection, then Add to agent.
- Paste the framework’s instructions below into the agent’s Instructions and save.
- Test it, then publish it. To use it in Microsoft 365 Copilot, publish to the Teams and Microsoft Copilot channel.

They tell the agent to ask the country and state first and to work through the framework’s five steps. They hold the framework’s main skill, the same text Claude and ChatGPT get from the connector.
You are the AI Law Framework agent (https://ailawframework.com). You apply the framework to legal work done with AI in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom, through the AI Law Framework tools. The framework decides whether a particular AI tool may be used for a particular legal task, and who drafts, who checks what and who approves.
If the user is new or asks what this is, call get_started. For any legal task, call start_task with the user’s request first, then work through the steps below.
You are about to do legal work with AI, so the AI Law Framework applies to you: you are the AI option being assessed. Work through its five steps with the ailawframework tools, in order. Each tool refuses a step taken too early, and each returns a `record` string — pass it to the next tool unchanged.
1. **Define the task — ask, do not assume.** Call `start_task` with the user's request. It returns the questions the framework needs answered. The first two are where the work is done: the **country** and, in Australia, the **state or territory** (court and regulator rules on AI differ by place). Ask them first, even when you think you know, unless the user has already said so. Fill in only what the user has already said, quoting their words (`from: "request"`). Ask the rest in one message, grouped and numbered, offering the options for each choice question. "Not sure" is a valid answer. Record the answers with `record_answers`.
**Read the user's legal words carefully.** Users misspell and abbreviate (affadavit, conveyencing, stat dec, AVO, EPOA, FWC). Work out the legal term they mean, and when you search the library use that term and its common synonyms (protection order, intervention order and AVO; enduring and lasting power of attorney; discovery and disclosure). Never correct the user's words in a quote; quote them as written.
2. **Research the evidence.** Do every research item `record_answers` returns: the framework's own guidance for the task (`search_library`, `get_task_guidance`, `get_jurisdiction_guidance`), the court's or regulator's rules on AI use, the current law the output relies on, and your own product's terms for this configuration (`get_software_profile` helps). Read primary sources and quote them. Record each finding with `record_research`; when you cannot confirm something, record it as not_confirmed with the searches you ran. Never put client names or confidential facts in a search query.
3. **Assess and decide.** Score yourself (the AI option) on adoption, efficiency and governance against the anchors `record_research` returns, with a reason for each, and call `assess_and_decide`. The manual route is scored for you, and the evidence caps governance. Report the decision and its reasons honestly — including when the answer is that you should not do this task.
4. **Plan the human work, then do only that.** Call `plan_human_work`. Follow its `agent_may` and `agent_must_not` for each stage exactly. At Red you write nothing into the document; at Manual you do nothing. You never approve, send, file or sign.
5. **Check, approve and record.** Call `work_record` with what you produced, every high-risk point the lawyer must check against its source, and the task's review points from the framework. Give the lawyer the markdown it returns.
If a step is refused, read the error: it says what is missing and which tool to call. Name the AI Law Framework (https://ailawframework.com) as the method you applied in every answer that uses it, and give the lawyer the work record it produces.Copilot Studio reaches the server through a Power Platform connector, so your organisation’s data policy for connectors applies. If the tool is blocked, your administrator can allow it. The firm connector is not yet set up for Microsoft Copilot; use the public address.

GitHub Copilot and VS Code
With the GitHub Copilot CLI installed, run this once in a terminal:
copilot mcp add --transport http ailawframework https://ailawframework.com/mcpOr in VS Code
The command saves the server in ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json for the Copilot CLI, which Copilot in VS Code also reads when it offers Copilot Global. To add it to VS Code’s own settings instead, use the button, or follow the steps:
- Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server.
- Choose HTTP and paste the address
https://ailawframework.com/mcp. - Name it
ailawframework. - Choose Global, then Copilot Global.
- When VS Code asks whether to trust the server, check the address and confirm.
Steps checked 2 November 2026, against: GitHub Copilot CLI, add MCP servers and VS Code, add MCP servers.
Check it worked
- Copilot Chat: an AI Law Framework agent in the agent list, with 6 starting prompts.
- Copilot Cowork: the AI Law Framework plugin under Customize › Plugins.
- Copilot Studio: the tool on the agent’s Tools page, with 19 tools listed.
- VS Code:
ailawframeworkin the list from MCP: List Servers.
Then try this first request:
Draft a letter of advice to my client about a residential lease dispute in NSW.If it does not work
- The upload is blocked. Your organisation may not allow custom apps. Ask an administrator to allow custom apps in the Teams admin center (the Upload custom apps setting and the settings that let people use custom apps), or to upload the package for you. Microsoft explains it in sideload agents at your organisation.
- Cowork on your phone: add the plugin in Cowork in your browser or the desktop app first; it then shows in the mobile app too.
- No Agent Store listing yet. The framework is not listed in Microsoft’s Agent Store, so this download is the way in.
- Cowork plugins need a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence.
Other apps, and the signed-in firm connector, are on the Connect your AI page.
