Appeal against a school suspension or expulsion decision (NSW public schools), with timeline and record index
A written appeal for a student or parent against a principal's decision to suspend or expel from a NSW public school, built on the two appeal grounds in the Department's procedures (procedures not followed; unfair decision), with a discipline timeline and record index.

When to use it
Use when acting for a student or parent or carer after a principal of a NSW public school has decided to suspend or expel. Only the original decision to suspend or expel can be appealed, not a formal caution, an extension or a notice of potential expulsion. For non-government schools and other states, adapt to that school's or system's own procedures.
Used for these tasks
- Prepare the appeal or review submission against a suspension, exclusion or expulsion
- Build the discipline timeline and record index for a suspension or expulsion
Each task page says how far AI may help with the task and what the lawyer must review.
How AI may be used
AI may build the timeline and record index from the school's letters, the student's records and the family's notes, and check the school's steps against the procedures; the lawyer settles the grounds and every statement in the appeal with the family.
AI may
- Build a dated timeline of incidents, cautions, meetings, notices and decisions from the documents supplied
- Index the records the school relied on and list any the family has not been given
- Compare each step the school took with the steps the procedures require and list apparent gaps
AI must not
- Must not add facts about what the student did or said that are not in the documents or the family's instructions
- Must not decide whether the decision was harsh, unjust or unreasonable, or whether disability discrimination occurred
- Must not process the student's health, disability or child protection information in a tool outside the approved environment
The lawyer checks
- The decision appealed is the original decision to suspend or expel, and the correct decision maker is addressed
- Each ground is tied to a specific step in the procedures or to specific facts showing unfairness
- Disability, reasonable adjustments, trauma and other student factors considered, and whether a separate discrimination complaint is also warranted
- The student's and family's account confirmed by them before the appeal is sent
