Verification checklist

Check AI-assisted legal work before you rely on it

Read the output against the instructions, open the sources, and write down what you checked.

  1. Read it against the instructions

Compare the output with the question you asked. If the tool answered a different question, do not repair that by skimming.

  2. Open the sources

Open every case, statute and document the output relies on. A citation that looks real is not a source until you have read it.

  3. Check the facts you supplied

Check names, dates, figures and defined terms against the documents you provided. Do not trust a summary of a document you have not opened.

  4. Ask what the tool was not shown

A later draft, a missing instruction, or a document that was not uploaded is not in the answer.

  5. Keep the decision

Advice, filing and signature stay with a lawyer. Write down what you checked, in enough detail that another lawyer could see it was done.

Questions

Is this legal advice?

No. These notes are general information about using AI in legal work in Australia. They are not advice on a matter, a client or a court.

Who can read a note I save?

Only the account that saved it. A note on this public page is different: anyone can read it. Your own notes are not published.

What should I leave out of a saved note?

Leave out a client’s name, a file number and other personal information unless you mean to store it on this account.
