- Case-law summarisation

## Key facts

| --- | --- |

| Australian presence | Yes. Australian operator BarNetwork Pty Limited ABN 32 092 121 198, Sydney. Open Law describes BarNet as an Australian not-for-profit. Customer-content note (11 October 2022) says data is stored and servers operated in Australia. Checked 2026-10-10. Vendor page: “We store data and operate servers in Australia.” (https://www.openlaw.com.au/security). Recorded as hosted in Australia. Checked 2026-10-10. ## What the research found

| Topic | Status | Finding | Open question | Sources |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Public JADE versus Professional | Public claim only | jade.io is the research interface; JADE Professional adds research tools, export/sharing and cite-check of uploaded documents. It is not marketed as an agentic drafting platform. Open Law lists JADE and JADE Professional as products of BarNetwork Pty Limited. | Which Professional modules and any generative features are on our order? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [Open Law — about BarNetwork / JADE](https://openlaw.com.au/about) |
| Hosting | Public claim only | BarNetwork customer-content note (11 October 2022): data is stored and servers are operated in Australia. Customer Content is encrypted with a unique user key. The note is a published security statement, not a signed DPA. Checked 2026-10-10. Vendor page: “We store data and operate servers in Australia.” (https://www.openlaw.com.au/security). Recorded as hosted in Australia. Checked 2026-10-10. Vendor page: “This information is securely stored in Australia.” (https://www.openlaw.com.au/security). Recorded as hosted in Australia. | Confirm current production and backup regions, including any change since the 2022 note. | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [JADE Professional hosting statement checked 2026-10-10](https://www.openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Cite-check | Public claim only | Upload a legal document into MY JADE; JADE checks citations, links them to cases and legislation, flags likely corrections, and can produce a list of authorities. Similarity tool and annotations are also described. This is citation analysis, not a chat assistant. | Does cite-check send the full document to a third-party model, and what is stored afterwards? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking); [JADE Professional — document uploads](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/document-uploads-a) |
| Australian coverage | Public claim only | JADE is built for researching Australian law (case law and legislation). Home page lists Australian jurisdictions plus New Zealand and Norfolk Island. Currency and authorised-report status still need librarian confirmation. | Which courts and consolidations are in Professional, and how is currency shown? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io) |
| Pricing | Public claim only | JADE Professional is advertised at AUD 95 a month or AUD 995 a year. Terms (12 February 2025): monthly or annual pre-paid subscription in AUD; cancel at least 3 working days before renewal or it runs to term; 30 days' email notice of fee changes; enterprise terms may differ. | Confirm the Professional versus Enterprise quote and whether cite-check is included. | [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Integrations | Not confirmed | No DMS or Word connector was described on the home, Professional or document-upload pages reviewed. | Are there Word or DMS connectors? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Support | Public claim only | Support via help@jade.io and help@openlaw.com.au. Support-policy URL exists in the jade.io footer. Training events are advertised on Open Law. | What are support hours and the security contact? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Quality | Not confirmed | No independent AI hallucination study of JADE cite-check was found. Cite-check is described as matching citations to the JADE corpus and suggesting corrections. | How is cite-check accuracy measured, and what is the false-positive/negative rate? | [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Task fit | Public claim only | Fit is Australian case research and cite-check of drafts. It does not replace a generative research assistant. | Confirm we are buying research/cite-check only, not a chat assistant. | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Uploading drafts | Not confirmed | Cite-check requires uploading a legal document to BarNetwork. The 2022 note says uploads are used only to analyse that document on JADE, are encrypted, and are visible only to the user unless sharing is granted. | What happens to uploaded documents, and is a DPA available? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Models | Public claim only | No third-party LLM is named. The 2022 customer-content note says BarNet does not apply machine learning or AI techniques or other modelling to collect or aggregate information from uploads. Cite-check is described as linking citations to the JADE corpus. Jasmine is named as a product on that note; its model, if any, is not described. | Which models, if any, process uploaded documents or queries today? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Subprocessors | Public claim only | No dated subprocessor list. The 2022 note names Google Analytics (cookie; data said not to be shared) and an unnamed ecommerce provider for credit-card payments (cards not stored on BarNet systems). Terms confirm the card processor. | Provide the current subprocessor list and locations, including analytics and payments. | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Training | Public claim only | 2022 note: uploads are used only to provide analysis of that document on JADE. BarNet makes no other use of uploaded documents and does not apply machine learning or AI techniques or other modelling to collect or aggregate information. Feedback that includes a document is only via an explicit support request. | Confirm this still applies to cite-check and any Jasmine or newer AI features, in a DPA. | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Usage data | Public claim only | Operational logging: IP, session cookie, browser capabilities and requested URL. Automatic logging retained less than 14 days, usually less than 7, and is said to contain no Customer Content beyond that operational set. Google Analytics cookie; vendor says that data is not shared and there is no advertising. Public Content (reviews/questions) is licensed more broadly under the Terms. | What telemetry is stored today and for how long, including Professional cite-check? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Retention | Public claim only | By default, uploads stay in the user's JADE personal library. Users can turn storage off globally or per upload so content is deleted after analysis. Search history is on by default in MY JADE, encrypted, user-only; it can be turned off. Viewing history is off by default. System logs <14 days. | How long are uploaded documents, folders and searches kept for our Enterprise tenancy? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Deletion | Public claim only | Users may delete uploaded documents in MY JADE. Deleting a JADE account is described as irretrievably deleting Customer Content (documents, annotations, search history, saved searches, viewing history). Replicated copies go at the same time; encrypted backups in Australia 'eventually disappear'. Terms: BarNet may delete Content after account/subscription end. Enterprise accounts are owned by the organisation. | How do we delete uploads and certify deletion on exit, including backups? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Staff access | Public claim only | 2022 note: BarNet has no access to uploaded documents, search history, saved searches or JadeMarks because they are encrypted with the user's unique key. The same claim is made for backups. Support access is only if the user explicitly shares a document in a support request. | Who at BarNetwork can read MY JADE content, and is that logged? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Access | Public claim only | Unique user key; optional extra password to hide uploads or JadeMarks from search. Sharing is user-granted and revocable. Enterprise administrators can set group membership and retain or reallocate shared content when a user leaves. SSO/MFA is not described. | Is SSO/MFA available on Professional or Enterprise? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Encryption | Public claim only | 2022 note: data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Customer Content is stored encrypted with a unique user key. Algorithms are not named. | What encryption algorithms and key management are used in transit and at rest? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Assurance | Public claim only | As of 11 October 2022 BarNet said it was working towards ISO 27001 and had implemented policies based on ISO 27002. No current SOC 2 or ISO certificate was found on the pages reviewed. | Provide any current independent security report or ISO 27001 certificate. | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Terms | Public claim only | Terms of use updated 12 February 2025. Contracting entity BarNetwork Pty Limited ABN 32 092 121 198, Level 22, 52 Martin Place, Sydney. NSW law; exclusive NSW courts. Services not warranted error-free. Privacy Policy and Acceptable Use Policy are incorporated. Additional commercial terms for Professional. No DPA was found. No numbered liability cap. | Provide Professional/Enterprise DPA, liability cap and any order-form overrides. | [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Transfers | Public claim only | Servers and backups are described as in Australia. Google Analytics is used; the note does not say whether that processing leaves Australia. Credit-card processing is by an unnamed ecommerce provider. | Does any processing, including analytics and payments, leave Australia? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Incidents | Not confirmed | No breach-notification timeline was found in the terms or the 2022 security note. | What is the breach-notification period, including NDB? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Changes | Public claim only | Terms: BarNet intends to announce term changes on the websites in advance and by email where an address is held, but may change, limit, suspend or discontinue features without advance notice if it reasonably believes it necessary. Professional fee or inclusion changes: no less than 30 days' email notice, effective next billing cycle. | How are material product or hosting changes notified for Enterprise? | [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Exit | Public claim only | Export of Customer Content from MY JADE as PDF, Word and other formats is described. Terms: download/export Content before account or subscription ends; BarNet may delete Content afterwards. If BarNet terminates for breach, export may be refused. Professional cancel takes effect at the end of the prepaid term. | How do we export MY JADE and obtain certified deletion on termination? | [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security); [BarNet terms of use (updated 12 February 2025)](https://jade.io/terms) |
| Connectors | Not confirmed | No third-party product connectors were described. Google Analytics is used on the site. | Are there any third-party connectors into MY JADE or cite-check? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [Open Law — information about JADE and OpenLaw customer content (11 October 2022)](https://openlaw.com.au/security) |
| Web search | Public claim only | Research and cite-check are over JADE's corpus, not described as open-web generative search. | Confirm cite-check and search do not call the open web. | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io); [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |
| Agency | Public claim only | No agentic send/share automation was advertised beyond user-controlled sharing. | Can any feature act on email or DMS without a person? | [JADE home (BarNetwork Pty Limited)](https://jade.io) |
| Cite-check review | Public claim only | Cite-check is an aid; where an error is identified JADE helps identify likely corrections. The lawyer remains responsible for every citation. | Show how unmatched or doubtful citations are flagged. | [JADE Professional — automatic citation checking](https://openlaw.com.au/jade-professional/citation-checking) |

## Notes

jade.io privacy and in-app security URLs still render as the home shell; the usable security text is the 11 October 2022 Open Law note and the 12 February 2025 terms at jade.io/terms. ISO 27001 was only 'working towards' in 2022. Treat JADE as Australian research/cite-check, not a Harvey-class assistant, until any newer AI (including Jasmine) is documented.
