# First-interview record

> Internal note of the first interview: who attended, what was said about the injury, the schemes and deadlines discussed, the advice given in outline, and the next steps. It is a file note, not a witness statement.

## When to use it

Use after the first in-person, video or telephone interview, once the lawyer has decided whether to open a file. Do not send it to the insurer or attach it to a court document. A witness statement or an affidavit is a separate task and is written by the lawyer.

## Used for these tasks

- [Triage a new injury enquiry against scheme eligibility](https://ailawframework.com/practice/personal-injury-and-compensation/triage-a-new-injury-enquiry-against-scheme-eligibility.md)
- [Calculate limitation and pre-action notice deadlines from the injury facts](https://ailawframework.com/practice/personal-injury-and-compensation/calculate-limitation-and-pre-action-notice-deadlines-from-the-injury-fac.md)

## How AI may be used

The tool may turn the lawyer's interview notes into this file note, and the lawyer who was at the interview checks that it matches what was said and what was advised.

**AI may:**

- Put the lawyer's notes under the headings and list the deadlines the lawyer named
- List documents produced at the interview and the follow-up tasks
- Mark a gap where the notes do not record an answer

**AI must not:**

- Must not add advice, a diagnosis or a concession that is not in the notes
- Must not turn this note into an affidavit, a witness statement or a statutory declaration
- Must not send the note to a court, an insurer or another party

**The lawyer checks:**

- The lawyer who conducted the interview signs the note and corrects anything the tool added
- Advice recorded here matches the limitation letter or the decline letter actually sent
- The note stays in the firm's approved system. It is not a document filed in court, so a court generative-AI practice note is not engaged by writing it. If a later affidavit or witness statement is prepared, the lawyer writes that document
