## Key facts

- Kind: Checklist. Steps or checks to work through and tick off.
- Practice area: [Military & Defence Law](https://ailawframework.com/precedents/military-and-defence-law.md)
- Jurisdictions: Australia, Commonwealth
- AI level: Yellow. You and the tool draft together, with you directing. You check every statement you rely on.
- Law stated as at: 2026-10-22
- Status: Maintained. Checked on 2026-10-22 against the authority it cites, for Australia and Commonwealth.

## When to use it

Use when a serving member cannot use the Defence Protected Network form, or when a former member, a family member, or another civilian wants to write to the Inspector-General about military justice. It does not draft the submission. It is not the death-inquiry brief and it is not the redress complaint.

## Used for these tasks

## How AI may be used

AI may list the page's in-scope and out-of-scope categories against the instructions; the lawyer decides whether a submission is the right channel and what is sent.

**AI may:**

- Match each concern in the instructions to a category the submissions section lists, or mark it as not listed
- Record the channel the person will use, from the three the page names

**AI must not:**

- Must not draft the submission or a witness account
- Must not promise that the Inspector-General will overturn a Defence decision
- Must not promise updates to a person who has given no contact details

**The lawyer checks:**

- A matter the page says should go to the Joint Military Police, the Directorate of Investigations, or Joint Health Command is not described as an Inspector-General submission
- An anonymous submission is recorded with the page's warning about limited inquiries and no updates
- The person is told that findings go to Defence authorities and do not themselves change the decision
