## When to use it

Use when advising an insurer, claims handler or broker that uses or plans to use AI in claims triage, assessment, fraud detection, settlement or customer communications, or when acting for an insured who suspects an automated decision. Review it annually and when tools or law change.

## How AI may be used

AI may support triage, document extraction and fraud indicators in claims, but every denial, reduction, fraud referral or cash settlement offer is reviewed and decided by a person with authority, and the insured gets reasons a person can explain.

**AI may:**

- Triage and route claims, extract data from documents and flag missing information
- Flag indicators of possible fraud or document manipulation for human investigation
- Draft routine communications from approved templates for human review

**AI must not:**

- Must not deny, reduce or delay a claim without a person deciding it
- Must not treat a fraud or deepfake score as proof
- Must not use claimant data to train models outside the insurer's approved terms
- Must not communicate a decision without reasons a person can explain

**The lawyer checks:**

- The AI inventory and governance arrangements are documented and current
- Human review applies to every adverse outcome and is real, not a rubber stamp
- Privacy policy and notices meet APP 1.7–1.9 from 10 December 2026
- Suspected synthetic evidence is investigated fairly before any adverse step
