## When to use it

Use for a current, past or prospective higher education student who is not satisfied with how their provider handled a complaint, or cannot complain to the provider, about matters such as safety and wellbeing, enrolment and exclusion, special consideration, course changes or the provider's complaint and appeal procedures. Not for VET courses or grades.

## Used for these tasks

## How AI may be used

AI may summarise the provider complaint file into a chronology and draft the complaint from the student's instructions; the lawyer or advocate checks eligibility and every statement with the student before it is sent.

**AI may:**

- Build a chronology of the issue and the student's complaint to the provider from the documents supplied
- Check the issue against the NSO's listed scope and exclusions and flag any doubt
- Draft the complaint from the student's instructions, quoting the provider's responses accurately

**AI must not:**

- Must not add facts the student has not given or documents do not show
- Must not decide that the matter is within the NSO's jurisdiction where it may involve academic judgement
- Must not process details of gender-based violence or other sensitive matters in a tool outside the approved environment

**The lawyer checks:**

- Provider is registered with TEQSA and the matter is not academic judgement, a VET course, employment or an appointment
- The student has complained to the provider, or the reason they cannot is explained
- If someone else will communicate with the NSO, the student has signed the NSO's permission form
- Other or parallel avenues considered (Australian Human Rights Commission, police, the provider's internal appeal), and the student's safety needs addressed
