- Practice area: [AI decision systems](https://ailawframework.com/precedents/ai-decision-systems.md)
- Jurisdictions: United States, California

## When to use it

Use when a California-licensed lawyer or firm sets up or audits its generative AI use before 1 January 2027, and when onboarding staff after that date. Pair it with the firm's AI policy, the California court disclosure statement and the citation verification record in this library.

## How AI may be used

A tool may map the firm's AI tools to each statutory duty and list gaps. A lawyer decides whether a tool's access is restricted under 6068.1(a)(3)(A) and signs off the checklist.

**AI may:**

- List the firm's AI tools and the matters they are used on, from the firm's own register
- Mark each tool against the duties in sections 2 to 6 and flag a duty with no control
- Draft staff reminders that quote the statute accurately

**AI must not:**

- Must not decide that a tool's access is restricted to the attorney and authorised persons
- Must not mark a citation, a vendor term or a control as checked
- Must not treat this checklist as a substitute for the State Bar guidance or any Judicial Council rule issued after 7 November 2026

**The lawyer checks:**

- The vendor terms for each tool have been read by a lawyer for who can access inputs, retention and training use
- The firm has decided how it will meet the court disclosure duty in 6068.1(a)(3)(C) and recorded that decision
- The Judicial Council and the local court have been checked for any rule, form or standard issued after 7 November 2026
