| What the lawyer must review | Do not time a series from the last act unless the lawyer finds that rule in the Act Apply the guide's 3 years, or until age 21 if the person was under 18 when the violence happened. ## Checking plan

**Verify against sources**

The lawyer decides whether the application is in time. The tool lists the dates and the period the guide states.

- What the AI does: From the dates the lawyer marks, list each act and its date. Do not pick a last-act rule the guide does not state, and do not write the explanation for a late application.
- What the lawyer does: Decide which date starts time and whether extra time is sought.
- Who reviews: Lawyer competent in this practice area
- Basis: Checked against the linked sources on 23 October 2026. Confirm the current instrument before reliance.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. The guide requires an application within 3 years of the act of violence, or by age 21 if the person was under 18 when the violence happened.
2. The opened guide does not say a series is timed from the last act. Do not apply that rule.
3. Extra time is only in special circumstances: physical or psychological effects, impaired capacity, age, the offender in a position of power, influence or trust, or other significant factors. Supporting information is required.
4. If the application is late, the guide asks for an explanation and supporting information from a doctor, psychologist, counsellor, or domestic and family violence service. Writing that explanation is a different task.

## Notes

- The Act section that sets the application period was not opened. Section 124's 28 days is the internal-review period, not this one. Use the guide, and have the lawyer confirm the application section before reliance.
- Do not convert the special-circumstances list into a grant of extra time.
- Medical reports stay in a firm-controlled tool. ASCR r 9 and APP 11 apply, and a breach may be notifiable under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

## Practical guide

Jurisdiction: Victim Assist Queensland time limits

**Deliverable**: A list of acts and dates beside the period the guide states.

**Inputs**

- Dates of each act the lawyer marks
- The applicant's date of birth
- The Queensland guide

**Example**: Illustrative example: Two acts are four years apart. The list shows 3 years from each date. It does not start both from the later date.

**Stop and escalate when**

- The dates of the acts are incomplete.
- The applicant was under 18 and the date of birth is missing.

Checked 2026-10-23.
