| Human involvement | Red: Lawyer writes; AI may check, clarify or collect data |
| How AI is used | From the commencement date and the orders, list the status conference, the hearing window and the standard-order documents. The tool does not tell the Court the case is ready. |
| What the lawyer must review | The lawyer decides whether the case is ready to take a hearing date. In the District Court, the hearing date is 8 to 11 months out, unless the case cannot be heard within 12. In the Supreme Court General Civil List, be ready to take a date at the first case-management review. Cases should be ready to proceed on the hearing date. The standard orders set the pre-hearing documents. |

## Checking plan

**Verify against sources**

The lawyer decides readiness. The tool lists the Practice Note 16 and SC CL 1 dates.

- What the AI does: From the commencement date and the orders, list the status conference, the hearing window and the standard-order documents. The tool does not tell the Court the case is ready.
- What the lawyer does: Decide readiness and what is said to the Court about a hearing date.
- Who reviews: Lawyer competent in this practice area
- Basis: Checked against the linked sources on 23 October 2026. Confirm the current instrument before reliance.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Practice Note 16 aims to have cases completed within 12 months. At the status conference the case takes a hearing date. That date is between eight and 11 months from commencement, except where the case cannot for good reason be heard within 12 months.
2. The standard orders require the chronology, the schedules of reports, objections, damages and issues, and a court book limited to specifically relevant documents if one is prepared.
3. Practice Note SC CL 1 expects each party to be ready to accept a hearing date at the first judicial case-management review, with availabilities and an estimate.
4. SC CL 1 does not apply to the professional negligence list or the institutional abuse list.

## Notes

- Supreme Court Practice Note SC GEN 23, commenced on 3 February 2025, prohibits generative AI from generating evidentiary content, and requires prior leave before it is used to draft an expert report.
- SC GEN 23 allows a chronology, an index or a witness list. No District Court generative AI practice note was opened. Practice Note 16 governs the General List.

## Practical guide

Jurisdiction: District Court General List under Practice Note 16, or the Supreme Court General Civil List under Practice Note SC CL 1

**Deliverable**: A hearing-readiness checklist. The lawyer tells the Court whether a date can be taken.

**Inputs**

- The commencement date
- The status conference or case-management date
- Counsel's availability and the estimate

**Example**: Illustrative example: A hearing date is set for month ten. The chronology is still unserved three clear days before that hearing. The checklist marks the standard orders. The lawyer does not treat the status conference as the day the chronology is due.

**Stop and escalate when**

- The proceeding is on a list excluded by Practice Note SC CL 1.
- The tool is asked to tell the Court the matter is ready.
