## Checking plan

**Coxswain Grade 1 against the vessel**

Match the certificate to the vessel length, the engine, the operating area and the expiry.

- What the AI does: From the certificate and the voyage, mark the vessel length, the propulsion power, whether the engine is inboard or outboard, the operating area, whether the vessel is a tender, and whether the certificate is inside its five-year term or a renewal lodged before expiry.
- What the lawyer does: The lawyer decides whether this certificate covers this command, this engine and this operating area.
- Who reviews: Responsible lawyer with competence in the matter
- Basis: Practical workflow informed by the linked primary sources; the traffic light and working checks are editorial guidance, not a court classification.
- Why: The level reflects what the work is, the consequence of an error, and how much of the output the lawyer must independently re-derive.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Confirm the vessel is under 12 metres, the inboard engine is under 500 kilowatts or the engine is an outboard, and the waters are inshore.
2. If the vessel is a tender, confirm it stays within 3 nautical miles of the parent vessel.
3. Do not treat the certificate as authority to command a vessel of 12 metres or more. Chief mate or deck watchkeeper duties stop at under 24 metres in inshore waters.
4. Confirm the certificate is inside five years, or that a renewal was lodged before expiry and the 90-day period is still running. The lawyer decides whether the command is covered.

## Notes

- These are suggested working checks. Confirm the required checking with the responsible lawyer before work starts; the checking approach does not establish permission to use AI.
