| Human involvement | Green: AI drafts, lawyer checks |
| How AI is used | From each closed or reportable service record, propose the service type, law type and problem type codes against the centre’s validated mapping to the National Legal Assistance Data Standards Manual, and flag records whose file notes do not support any code or support more than one. |
| What the lawyer must review | The principal solicitor or data lead validates the mapping once against the current manual, samples coded records each reporting period, resolves every flagged record, and confirms only de-identified, aggregated data leaves the centre. |

## Checking plan

**Lawyer review required**

The responsible lawyer reviews the work against the instructions, sources and intended use.

- What the AI does: From each closed or reportable service record, propose the service type, law type and problem type codes against the centre’s validated mapping to the National Legal Assistance Data Standards Manual, and flag records whose file notes do not support any code or support more than one.
- What the lawyer does: The principal solicitor or data lead validates the mapping once against the current manual, samples coded records each reporting period, resolves every flagged record, and confirms only de-identified, aggregated data leaves the centre.
- Who reviews: Responsible lawyer with competence in the matter
- Basis: Practical workflow informed by the linked primary sources; the traffic light and working checks are editorial guidance, not a court classification.
- Why: The level reflects what the work is, the consequence of an error, and how much of the output the lawyer must independently re-derive.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Confirm the client’s personal, financial and safety information goes only into a tool the service has approved for client data, and that the output discloses nothing the client has not agreed to share.
2. Validate the mapping against the current Data Standards Manual before each reporting period.
3. Sample a fixed number of coded records against their file notes each period.
4. Confirm only de-identified, aggregated data is reported outside the centre.

## Notes

- These are suggested working checks. Confirm the required checking with the responsible lawyer before work starts; the checking approach does not establish permission to use AI.
