## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Practice area | [International Trade, Customs & Sanctions](https://ailawframework.com/practice/international-trade-customs-and-sanctions.md) |
| Human involvement | Red: Lawyer writes; AI may check, clarify or collect data |
| How AI is used | From the infringement notice, extract the recipient, the alleged offence, the date of the alleged breach, the penalty amount, the payment date and any stated options. Do not recommend paying, seeking withdrawal, or contesting, and do not draft a letter. |
| What the lawyer must review | The lawyer decides whether to pay, to ask for withdrawal or more time with evidence, or to leave the notice unpaid and defend any prosecution. The lawyer writes any request. The lawyer checks the factsheet statement that paying is not an admission of liability. |

## Checking plan

**Lawyer-led judgement**

The lawyer makes the substantive assessment. Any permitted AI assistance remains supporting work with its own checks.

- What the AI does: From the infringement notice, extract the recipient, the alleged offence, the date of the alleged breach, the penalty amount, the payment date and any stated options. Do not recommend paying, seeking withdrawal, or contesting, and do not draft a letter.
- What the lawyer does: The lawyer decides whether to pay, to ask for withdrawal or more time with evidence, or to leave the notice unpaid and defend any prosecution. The lawyer writes any request. The lawyer checks the factsheet statement that paying is not an admission of liability.
- Who reviews: Responsible lawyer with competence in the matter
- Basis: Practical workflow informed by the linked primary sources; the traffic light and working checks are editorial guidance, not a court classification.
- Why: The level reflects what the work is, the consequence of an error, and how much of the output the lawyer must independently re-derive.
- Restriction: The lawyer makes the substantive assessment. Any permitted AI assistance remains supporting work with its own checks.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Read the notice for the offence, the dates and the penalty, and check them against the factsheet caps rather than against a converted dollar figure.
2. Confirm the penalty-unit value in section 4AA of the Crimes Act 1914 as at the date of the alleged breach.
3. The lawyer decides among payment, a withdrawal request, more time, or defending a prosecution, and writes any letter.
4. Check whether the factsheet reference to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal is still the right review statement before it is repeated to the client.

## Notes

- These are suggested working checks. Confirm the required checking with the responsible lawyer before work starts; the checking approach does not establish permission to use AI.
