## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Practice area | [Criminal Law](https://ailawframework.com/practice/criminal-law.md) |
| Human involvement | Red: Lawyer writes; AI may check, clarify or collect data |
| How AI is used | For each issue the lawyer names, list the transcript page and the ruling the page records. Do not write a ground of appeal. |
| What the lawyer must review | You write the grounds and you file the notice. In a federal criminal case, Rule 4(b)(1)(A) of the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure requires the defendant's notice of appeal to be filed in the district court within 14 days after the later of the entry of the judgment or order, or the filing of the government's notice of appeal. The government's notice, when it may appeal, is due within 30 days after the later of those events. A timely motion for judgment of acquittal under Criminal Rule 29, for a new trial under Criminal Rule 33, or for arrest of judgment under Criminal Rule 34 can change the defendant's 14 days under Rule 4(b)(3). You read that paragraph before you rely on a later date. Model Rule 3.3 applies to the grounds you file. This is not a state appeal, and it is not the 30-day civil period in Rule 4(a). |

## Checking plan

- What the AI does: For each issue the lawyer names, list the transcript page and the ruling the page records. Do not write a ground of appeal.
- Basis: Checked against the linked sources on 22 October 2026. Confirm the current instrument before reliance.

## Notes

- Rule 4(a) is the civil period. Do not use 30 days, or 60 days when the United States is a party, for a defendant's criminal appeal.
- A notice filed after the court announces the decision but before entry is treated as filed on the date of entry. Read Rule 4(b)(2) before counting from an announcement.
