| Human involvement | Green: AI drafts, lawyer checks |
| How AI is used | From the scheduling order and any certification or notice order the lawyer supplies, enter in a fixed template the dates the orders state for joining other parties, amending the pleadings, completing discovery, filing motions, pretrial conferences, trial, and any time for requesting exclusion. Tag each date to the order. Do not decide whether a date should be moved. |
| What the lawyer must review | You check each date against the order and you diarize it. You decide whether to ask to change a date. Except in categories exempted by local rule, the judge must issue a scheduling order as soon as practicable, and unless the judge finds good cause for delay, within the earlier of 90 days after any defendant has been served or 60 days after any defendant has appeared. The order must limit the time to join other parties, amend the pleadings, complete discovery, and file motions. A schedule may be modified only for good cause and with the judge's consent. Rule 23(c)(1) requires the court to decide class certification at an early practicable time. There is no federal rule that the first hearing falls a set number of weeks after filing. Formal Opinion 512 requires you to check a generated date against the order before anyone relies on it. |

## Checking plan

- What the AI does: From the scheduling order and any certification or notice order the lawyer supplies, enter in a fixed template the dates the orders state for joining other parties, amending the pleadings, completing discovery, filing motions, pretrial conferences, trial, and any time for requesting exclusion. Tag each date to the order. Do not decide whether a date should be moved.
- Basis: Checked against the linked sources on 22 October 2026. Confirm the current instrument before reliance.

## Notes

- Enter only dates the orders state. Do not calculate a hearing date from a practice direction.
- Local rules often exempt categories of cases from the scheduling order, and they often shorten the Rule 26(f) conference.
- A state-court class action follows that state's rule, not Rule 23.
