## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Practice area | [Child Protection & Care Proceedings](https://ailawframework.com/practice/child-protection-and-care-proceedings.md) |
| Human involvement | Yellow: Lawyer and AI draft together |
| How AI is used | Read the department’s produced records or a subpoena return and list, page by page, every name, role, date and phrase that could identify the person who reported the child, every protected address or placement detail, and every passage about a third party, against the matter’s disclosure register; propose redactions as a marked list, not a redacted copy. |
| What the lawyer must review | The lawyer decides each redaction and whether any protected identity has already been disclosed (which may need to be raised with the department or the court), confirms nothing is passed to the client or an expert until screened, and decides whether the record may be relied on as it stands. The client’s and the reporter’s safety turn on this check. |

## Checking plan

**Line-by-line review**

Review the complete output at the level of each line, paragraph or clause; check facts, meaning and omissions.

- What the AI does: Read the department’s produced records or a subpoena return and list, page by page, every name, role, date and phrase that could identify the person who reported the child, every protected address or placement detail, and every passage about a third party, against the matter’s disclosure register; propose redactions as a marked list, not a redacted copy.
- What the lawyer does: The lawyer decides each redaction and whether any protected identity has already been disclosed (which may need to be raised with the department or the court), confirms nothing is passed to the client or an expert until screened, and decides whether the record may be relied on as it stands. The client’s and the reporter’s safety turn on this check.
- Who reviews: Responsible lawyer with competence in the matter
- Basis: Practical workflow informed by the linked primary sources; the traffic light and working checks are editorial guidance, not a court classification.
- Why: The level reflects what the work is, the consequence of an error, and how much of the output the lawyer must independently re-derive.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Before anything is relied on, confirm the material may lawfully go into the tool at all (approved tool, no retention or training), that no reporter identity or protected address has been exposed, and that the child cannot be identified from the output.
2. Sample at least one batch page by page without the tool’s list and compare what each found.
3. Check indirect identifiers (a teacher’s role, a GP’s clinic, a date of a phone call) as well as names.
4. Record each redaction decision and its reason before any page leaves the file.

## Notes

- These are suggested working checks. Confirm the required checking with the responsible lawyer before work starts; the checking approach does not establish permission to use AI.
