## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Practice area | [Child Protection & Care Proceedings](https://ailawframework.com/practice/child-protection-and-care-proceedings.md) |
| Human involvement | Red: Lawyer writes; AI may check, clarify or collect data |
| How AI is used | From the department’s record, clinic and assessment material and the parent’s own service history, build a table matching each identified need (drug and alcohol, mental health, parenting, housing, domestic violence support) to the service categories the court can request, the providers named in the record, and what each report says about engagement. |
| What the lawyer must review | The lawyer decides which services to seek, takes the parent’s instructions on what they will engage with, drafts the application and any evidence in support themselves, and checks that health and treatment details go only where they must. The parent’s privacy in health and treatment records is central. |

## Checking plan

**Lawyer-led judgement**

The lawyer makes the substantive assessment. Any permitted AI assistance remains supporting work with its own checks.

- What the AI does: From the department’s record, clinic and assessment material and the parent’s own service history, build a table matching each identified need (drug and alcohol, mental health, parenting, housing, domestic violence support) to the service categories the court can request, the providers named in the record, and what each report says about engagement.
- What the lawyer does: The lawyer decides which services to seek, takes the parent’s instructions on what they will engage with, drafts the application and any evidence in support themselves, and checks that health and treatment details go only where they must. The parent’s privacy in health and treatment records is central.
- Who reviews: Responsible lawyer with competence in the matter
- Basis: Practical workflow informed by the linked primary sources; the traffic light and working checks are editorial guidance, not a court classification.
- Why: The level reflects what the work is, the consequence of an error, and how much of the output the lawyer must independently re-derive.
- Restriction: The lawyer makes the substantive assessment. Any permitted AI assistance remains supporting work with its own checks.

## Checks the lawyer makes

1. Before anything is relied on, confirm the material may lawfully go into the tool at all (approved tool, no retention or training), that no reporter identity or protected address has been exposed, and that the child cannot be identified from the output.
2. Check each need in the table against the document that identifies it.
3. Confirm the services sought are ones the parent has instructed they will engage with.
4. Confirm no part of the table has been carried into the filed application or any affidavit.

## Notes

- These are suggested working checks. Confirm the required checking with the responsible lawyer before work starts; the checking approach does not establish permission to use AI.
