## Your firm’s AI brain

The AI policy and knowledge base for Australian law firms. Check whether AI may be used for a legal task, who drafts and what the lawyer must review, and keep the firm’s AI policies, precedents and decisions in one place. Research for your firm, not an approval of any tool or piece of work.

## Where to start

- [Find your task](https://ailawframework.com/practice.md): Areas of law and the tasks under them, each saying how AI may be used and what the lawyer must review.
- [Quick check](https://ailawframework.com/quick-check): One task, one tool, and a court or tribunal if there is one. A provisional answer on a single screen, then the full assessment if you want a work record. General information, not legal advice.
- [Start a task](https://ailawframework.com/work): Choose the area of law and the piece of work. You get the tier, who may draft, and the checks the lawyer must make — in three clicks, with no account.
- [Assess a tool for a task](https://ailawframework.com/work?software=new#software): Every assessment is for a particular task, because the same tool can be right for one and barred for the next. Add the product and answer the questions. The three scores are adoption (can the firm keep it working), efficiency (does it save work at the required quality) and governance (can the firm’s controls carry the risk). Your evidence sets how far governance can reach, and the decision follows from all three.
- [Read the method](https://ailawframework.com/how-it-works.md): The five steps across both phases, the three questions, the four levels and every rule, on one page you can print or send to someone.
- [See it applied](https://ailawframework.com/how-it-works/example): One task carried from start to finish: the scores, why an option is barred today, the plan, the checks and the record.
- [Connect your AI](https://ailawframework.com/connect.md): Add the framework to the AI you already use. For each legal task it asks you before it assumes, researches before it scores, and does only what the plan allows.

## The firm workspace

- Keep the firm’s AI policies, precedents and know-how in one private place that every lawyer reads from.
- Adopt a starting-point precedent from the library for any practice area, then edit it for your firm.
- Connect Claude or ChatGPT, so the AI your lawyers already use follows the firm’s own rules.

## Five steps, in two phases

- **Building the toolkit**: Steps 1 to 3, before any work on a matter starts: record the products the firm holds or is considering, assess each one for this task and decide, then set the plan for the human work. Once for each task — not once for each matter — and reviewed at least yearly, or sooner if the task, the product or its terms change.
- **Daily use**: Steps 4 and 5: the lawyer gets the task list and the checklist for the matter, does the work to the plan, and the checks and the approval are recorded. Every matter that uses the selected tool.

1. **Define the task.** Say exactly what you are producing, for whom, and what it has to be right about.
2. **Assess and decide.** Score the tool on three separate questions, and let the answers decide whether it may be used.
3. **Plan the human work.** Decide, stage by stage, who drafts, who checks what, and who approves.
4. **Do the work.** Carry out the task under the plan, in your usual systems.
5. **Check, approve and record.** Make the plan’s checks, above all at the high-risk points, have a named person approve the exact output, and release it as a separate act.

## Three questions, asked separately

Step 2 asks three things about one tool doing one task, each scored 1 to 5 against fixed wording. They are never averaged. The overall rating is the lowest of the three.

- **Adoption**: Can the firm put this into practice and keep it working?
- **Efficiency**: Does it save total human work at the required quality?
- **Governance**: Can the firm’s governance carry the risk this use creates?

Doing the work by hand is always one of the options, and it is scored too: adoption 5, efficiency 3, governance 4.

## The four levels

- **Green**: AI drafts, lawyer checks. The tool writes the first draft inside a template you have already tested. You check it.
- **Yellow**: Lawyer and AI draft together. You and the tool draft together, with you directing. You check every statement you rely on.
- **Red**: Lawyer writes; AI may check, clarify or collect data. You write the text. The tool writes nothing into the document. Where permitted, it may check, clarify or collect data, and anything it checks or collects is verified.
- **Manual (no AI)**: No AI at any stage. No AI is involved at any stage. This is always available and is the reference point every tool is compared against.
