# Australian data hosting for legal AI

> How to read a vendor’s Australian hosting claim, using the attributes this catalogue already records. Not a ranking, and not a finding that a tool is fit for a matter.

## Three different sentences

“We have customers in Australia”, “you can ask for an Australian region”, and “this tenancy stores and processes data in Australia” are three different claims. The comparison pages on this site keep them apart.

Australian presence is whether the vendor sells or supports the product here. Australian data hosting is whether storage and processing in Australia is offered. “On request” means it is not the standard region. “Stated, not guaranteed” means the vendor says it and the profile does not treat that sentence as a contractual region.

## What the catalogue stores

Each product profile has facts.australianRegion and facts.hostingRegions, taken from the vendor pages cited on that profile. The 10 October 2026 comparison file has a separate Australian data hosting attribute. When you read a pricing or alternatives page, the column heading tells you which of those sources the cell came from.

A tool can be present in Australia and still process the file offshore. The profile is the place to read the region. The order form is the place to bind it.

## Questions to ask before a file moves

- Which country stores the prompts, the documents and the outputs for our tenancy, and which country processes them?
- Is the Australian region the default, an option, or a sentence on a marketing page?
- Do subprocessors and model providers stay inside that region, or does the request leave it?
- What do the terms say about training on customer content, and about retention after the matter ends?
- If the file contains personal information, who has answered the cross-border disclosure question under Australian Privacy Principle 8? The OAIC’s APP guidelines are the public text. This page is not that advice.

## Questions

**What does Australian data hosting mean on this site?**

It means the comparison record says storage or processing in Australia is offered. It is not the same as having Australian customers, and it is not a guarantee that your tenancy is in that region.

**Does hosting in Australia decide whether I can use the tool?**

No. Hosting is one question. The court note, the client retainer, and the vendor terms are others. A yes in the table is not an approval.

**What if the vendor states Australia but the profile says it is not guaranteed?**

The page shows that label. Ask for the region in the order form and read the subprocessor list before you treat the marketing sentence as the architecture.

**Where is the Privacy Act test?**

Cross-border disclosure of personal information is Australian Privacy Principle 8. Read the OAIC’s guidelines and take advice on the file. This guide does not apply APP 8 for you.
