# How to use AI for family law matters in Australia

> Family law files follow the Federal Circuit and Family Court practice direction. Sensitive material stays out of public tools, and a financial summary is checked against the source documents.

## Check this before you rely on it

The FCFCOA direction is not the Federal Court’s GPN-AI. The Uniform Law statement, the Law Society of New South Wales guide and Queensland Guidance Statement No. 37 do not relax what the direction says about children, addresses and subpoenaed material.

## Steps

1. **Open the FCFCOA practice direction first.** Proceedings in that Court follow its practice direction on artificial intelligence. Read it before a document is uploaded or filed. The family-lawyers guide on this site is a pointer to that direction, not a substitute for it.
2. **Keep sensitive material out of a public tool.** A protected address, medical information, information about a child, and subpoenaed, discovery or suppressed material stay out of a public tool unless the direction’s closed-environment conditions are met. The Uniform Law statement and Queensland Guidance Statement No. 37 point the same way on confidentiality. They do not authorise an upload the direction forbids.
3. **Check financial summaries against the documents.** Balances, values and who owns what are read off the bank statement, the valuation and the disclosure, not off the model’s table. The Law Society of New South Wales guide expects that check from the solicitor. An affidavit in this Court still has to be the deponent’s own evidence. The affidavit guide is the place for that limit.

## Questions

**Is it allowed to use AI for family law matters in Australia?**

Only inside the FCFCOA practice direction. Public tools are the wrong place for protected, medical, child, subpoenaed or suppressed material unless that direction’s closed-environment conditions are met.

**What tools are used for family law matters?**

Profiles firms compare are listed on the family-lawyers guide, including FamilyProperty and LEAP. A listing is not approval for a parenting file.

**Can I paste a child’s information into a chatbot to draft an affidavit?**

No, unless the FCFCOA direction allows that environment. The affidavit also has to be the deponent’s own words. Read the direction and the affidavit guide.
